Denzel Washington - Malcolm X by Doctor-Pencil Denzel Washington - Malcolm X by Doctor-Pencil
I had this one about 80% complete when I put it aside to draw Jack Nicholson.

SIZE: 6 x 7 INCHES
TIME: about 8 hours
PAPER: Strathmore Bristol Smooth 300 series
PENCILS: Staedtler Mars Lumograph H, HB, F, B, 2B, 3B

To view the step scans I took, see this Google Doc:

PS - the UN-ENLARGED VIEW is the EXACT SIZE of the Actual Drawing
:D:D

I know that the space between his finger and his face is pitch black, yet on the other side of that finger is all white. But believe me, that's how the reference photo was. After I cropped it and converted it to B&W that is ;)

Hard to explain. I THINK about the textures that I draw as I draw them. Sounds x-files but? I think I laid down some B then smudged it it, and added some B on top of that. The rest u would have to see? It's application techniques?

Don't worry the finger looks perfect, if you look at the way the light is hitting him it's perfect!! Could I use perfect any more in this comment, but dang it is.....the hair is amazing. How do you get these human looks in their eyes......it's so creepy but so cool!

PASTE FROM MY TIP GUIDE www.tinyurl.com/drawingtipguide

One great trick I learned, was to use a small nail, duct tapped to an old pencil, as a stylus for scratching out whiskers, white hairs, highlights, etc. IMPORTANT: PRACTICE this before you ruin a drawing. Get an old piece of drawing paper, and practice the procedure. What I do, BEFORE (key) I put any graphite on the area, is hold the paper sideways in the light, (best under a magnifying glass) so I can see where I am scratching, and I make the needed lines, hairs or whiskers in the paper. THEN, I rub a pencil SIDEWAYS over the scratch mark, to Expose the white lines. I can then draw between them, or what ever, but the effect is amazing to me! It’s a PERFECT tool for creating white whiskers, white hair (against dark back ground), etc. You will find many uses for this! The MAIN concept of “Negative Drawing” is that you create what you are trying to draw, NOT by drawing it, but by drawing first what surrounds the object. Hair is a perfect example (hair type depending). Hair should NOT be many pencils lines, but the shadows BETWEEN the hairs, which by default, will create the ILLUSION of hair. The same with teeth. I draw the dark areas AROUND the teeth, which as a result, forms the shape of teeth.

Hey thanks! i like this concept. I was thinking you used a needle. But a nail sounds harder to use. haha I will try though. Yeah I usually don't draw all hair strands but I use an eraser to get in the highlights and stuff. I just wanted the finer ones in too...thanks, that's cool. I'll try it when I draw guys haha

the key is shoving the needle into a clutch pencil, which normally holds just the lead refills :D:D
