Gibson and Glover by Doctor-Pencil Gibson and Glover by Doctor-Pencil
I was first attracted to drawing this because of it's intense light sources, as well as being an exercise in patience for drawing all the highlighted hair :D

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover made a great pair, and were of course was very popular in their Lethal Weapon movie and it's sequels.

I used Bristol VELLUM this time, because I find that Vellum responds very well to scratching. I took a nail and a needle, and FIRST scratched out the highlights in the hair area, then drew around them. It was a lot of "negative space" drawing, which I never seem to have the patience for doing?

Paper: Bristol Vellum
Pencils: Staedtler B, 2B, 3B
Size: 6-1/2 inches tall (16cm) x 8-3/4 inches (22cm) wide
Time: Approximately 7 hours

It did not require much blending at all. The zoom view is actually larger than the drawing, but 600 pixels is too small. I wonder why they don't give us an option at 700 pixels wide???

Hope you like it?
:D:D:D

a nail?..hmmm never heard of that before..but looks like this turned out pretty well :) so i wanna try it lol...have any tips on how to do so? how hard did you 'scratch' the paper?

I explain it in detail in my tip guide here :D:D

Just be sure to practice on paper FIRST. Bottom line, it is SO simple and produces a range of effects that can make a beginner look 10 levels higher lol

Sue thing! I am finishing Sir Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector now, where he is in the dark, and I'm using this technique for his white stubble hair against the black. It's going to look good! It's an effect that makes you seem like a better artist than you may be? I tried it the first 2 weeks I was drawing and freaked myself out lol. Just practice on scratch paper, but it's hard to ruin the tooth of a good paper. Just don't go too deep, and try other object for wider valleys? Large sewing needles, nails, etc? :D:D
